This is the promo video for Kitsune’s ninth Maison compilation and as catchy as the eyecandy is, the album itself is so much better.
Arguably one of their stronger releases in the Maison series since KMC3, KMC9 doesn’t drag us back to the edgy beginnings of the series. Instead we’re shown a varied collection of tracks that cover many of the directions we’re seeing emerge in the post-electro / nu rave world. Chillwave from Washed Out. DFA retro disco from Holy Ghost! 90s throwback pop from Hurts. Post-Phoenix indie rock from Two Door Cinema Club and Jamaica (formerly known as Poney Poney Run Run).
KMC1 was my entree to Tom Vek, Lo-Fi-Fnk, Digitalism and Metronomy; KMC2 to Joakim and Cazals; KMC3 to The Whip, Boys Noize, Alex Gopher and Dead Disco. The Maison series is responsible for shaping a lot of my taste in music, and for the better. I’d like to say KMC9 does the same, but the heyday of when this kind of music was new and exciting has passed.
All in all KMC9 is a really good mix of rather enjoyable tracks and very much a welcome return to form for the label.
JBAG’s put together a tasty tempter of a minimix in advance of the album proper can be found here.
